Rear end problem..advice?

I just purchased a 2002 Gt and when i take turns at a slow speed such as coming into my driveway the rear end makes a clunking sound. Also if i accelerate and let off the gas the car will rock forward and back a lil with the same clunking sound. Does anyone know what may be wrong??

Sure its not a u-joint or loose pinion flange bolts?

might be loose lug nuts. loosen them then re-torque them down.

Just look for loose things under the rear of the car and in the trunk.

Ill take a look at that but i dont think its loose bolts because when
you drive it you can tell that its something big moving. My dad
took a look at it and said it was the rear end. He has worked with
cars alot and thinks someone could have raced alot and messed it up.
He also checked the drive shaft and said it seemed to have a lil
more play than it should. I just didnt know if anyone had encountered a problem
like this before. Thanks for the imput so far. I will check those things to make sure.

If there is a lot of play in the driveshaft and the u-joints are good and the bolts are tight chances are your ring and pinion are worn bad. Normally they will whine but I have seen it bad enough to make a clunking sound.

If thats the problem like u and i think the owner must have really messed up the rear end. I bought the extended warrenty but it doesnt take effect for 30days and 1000 miles. I just hope it doesnt go out before that time. Thanks

Well its not a real common occurence but I have seen them come in with under 50,000 miles and the differentials are beat to shiet.

Thats pretty sad when all the cars have rear end problems like that.
I think he just may have beaten the rear end but im taking the car in today. i took it a week ago and they said that somthing on the ebreak cable was loose and fixed the problem (BS) it still does it. everyone seems to agree that its most likely the gears or posi but ford is to lazy to try to fix it. its under warrenty tho so they will have to pay for it. Thanks for all your help i will let everyone know what happens.
