SA to LA - Sights to See?

Who's taken the long drive to the West Coast?

Just curious what are some of the highlights and definate pit-stops to make when traveling from San Antonio to Los Angeles (or anywhere West of Texas)?
I've traveled all over the East coast of the US, But never been West of Texas and want to know whats out there.

Grand Canyon and Hoover dam are great places to see out that way. Las vegas to Bakersfield yuk. Basically it's like a freaking desert.

Take hwy 1 up and you get a great ocean view drive.

The grand canyon is a nice place to stop. Isn't the cadillac ranc on the side of the road heading to LA? I think I remember seeing that when we drove out there a long time ago...

used to live out there till about 4yrs ago so before moving out here i've driven it more then 15times back and fourth..
But ya if your trying to knock several birds with one stone its kinda hard to do if your staying in one route unless your willing to detour a bunch. If you wanna sight see id say do it all in California. LOTS to do in L.a, and as much in San fransisco and the drive inbetween there is nice too.

Yeah I'm sure we could keep busy in LA being first timers, plus they have several amusement parks, curious about what to do on the way to LA

lol@bumblebee
Yeah I know what you mean about the greatness of actually seeing something in person versus in pictures/videos. We went to Niagara falls the beginning of this year and I still can't get over how HUGE those falls are, it is an absolutely Amazing thing to see and pictures do it NO justice!

We have been to Hoover Damn on one of our trips to Vegas, that was pretty neat, but Grand Canyon was a bit too far from Vegas to drive so we didn't get to do that, thats why I want to be sure to check it out this time.

I did the San Antonio to Sacramento drive in January when I discharged. Originally I planned on taking Route 66 starting in Santa Rosa, NM but time and money were short. The Route 66 car muesum is in Santa Rosa with a pretty decent collection. You can swing through Santa Fe from there.

if staying I-10 (which is long and boring lol), there are some sights along the way. Tombstone is not too far off I-10, probably a 30 minute detour. I recommend that, I saw that place when I was stationed out there in 2004. Tucson has a HUGE air muesum there, along with the military's aircraft boneyard. Phoenix I'm sure has some things to do. Between Phoenix and LA, it's alot of nothing. I do make a point to stop at the dinosaurs at a rest stop on I-10 in SoCal. Family tradition thing
