Shift kit or programmer/chip?
I have an 04 GT auto and I want firmer shifts. I understand there are two ways to get this. Either by getting a shift kit or through a programmer. Which is better? I'm looking for a good balance between performance and durability. I want the firm shifts that will chirp the tires if I am stomping on the gas pedal, at the same time I don't want to burn out my transmission. I'm looking for something in between.
What are the pros and cons of each approach? If you chose shift kits, then would you recommend the Jerry Mod? Baumann? B&M? Transgo? If you chose programmers, would you recommend SCT? Diablo? Tweecer? Custom tune with EEC reflash? My current mods are just a Mac catback and a K&N FIPK. The real mods planned for later are a ProChamber midpipe and 4.10 gears. Your thoughts?

Although the TwEECer chip is extremely versatile, it isn't very friendly with automatics. I have it on mine and STKR (the company that makes it: Slower Traffic Keep Right) have almost no support for it. I tried to install it and tune it myself but there were so many issues with the software since the CPU wasn';t in STKR's database yet. I worked with Mike Glover on several occasions and he sent me modifications of the binary files he had to get it to work with 99+ autos with no luck. After it sat for about 4-6 months on a shelf, I finally took it down to Mike Murillo and he installed it, worked on it for 2 days with Glover, dyno tuned it, and did a great job. unfortunately, since he had to wait on Glover to create yet another software edit, Mike was unable to adjust the daily driveability performance (only worked on WOT - did a kick arse job). I'll probably have to take another trip to see Mike in the next few months. He adjusted for my 4.10 rear end, shift points, shift stiffness, raised rev limiter, bumped timing adjusted a/f, etc.

I would go for a programmer since you can change it back easily if you do not like what you got...as well I would do a trans-cooler to assist with performance

I am leaning towards a programmer over a shift kit. I'm just worried about any long term effects on the transmission.

lol !
you cant do a shift kit in a computerized trans . they only way to make it shift harder is to tell the computer to do it .

Gee, here are links to Transgo shiftkits for the AODE that is used in the 2003 mustang (computer controlled)....Which tells me that you can do it with the KIT or the Computer http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...4925133+301933 http://www.txchange.com/tgp.htm

what did you end up doing......you can do either chip or program.. both shift kit and chip or program firm up shifting when adding a shift kit you can change the shift points from the valve body jmod are real good.....
What shift kit does is this: * cut slipping time by more than 70% (even more in the Competition version) and at the same time improve the quality of the shifting action itself. * makes possitive shifts without the ford overlaping of clutch packs during the initial shifts * it makes the shifts firmer, so as a quicker shift * gives you more complete gear control of your transmission (Shift Command), a special feature of our re-programming that allows you to shift back to low at any speed! heres a link to the jmod .....http://tccoa.com/articles/tranny/index.html# |

and i think personally unless you will be doing bolt on every so often it probably not good doing a program but then i dont know the cost of the eec programs i do know the cost of a chip reburn runs 50 bucks.......the most important thing on doing any up grade on a tranny is a trans cooler
