Shifter install!!!

So I get a tri ax the other day and my mechanic buddy who's going install it for me at his work is suddenly somebody I can't talk to right now!! To long of a story to get into So now I'm looking for a place to install my shifter and where I bought it was a little high imo. Any Ideas of a place in S. Houston Clear Lake area where I can have it done? No do it yourself replies please. I have no tools and mechanically challenged. thanks, Jimmy

How soon are you looking to put it on your car?
Next Friday and Saturday, I am going to be working on my car, and I can help you put your shifter in. It is the same style shifter that i have on my t5 except mine is a MGW. Let me know and i can help you next weekend.
I will be in Santa Fe just south of Clear Lake, so it would not be that far for you to come out.

this is an incredibly easy install...Can you turn a socket wrench?

all you need is a 10mm socket, 13mm socket and socket wrench(a small extension and a swivel socket) you can go to an autoparts store n get all of this for 20 bucks or so..

and you also need a tube of rtv gasket maker.

go to your shifter and grab the trim molding around the boot at a 10-4 o'clock position. pull straight up to the roof firmly(but dont yank) if you have a 12v power plug your gonNA need to undo the wire after you get the trim off.

after that, you take off the 4 10mm bolts(iirc on the size) and take that cover off. you should then see the other 4 13mm bolts of the actual shifter. take those out then pull off the shifter(9-10 your gonna need to tap the shifter base loose with a hammer or something)

get a razor blade and scrape the old gasket off and aply the new gasket silicon...then bolt up the shifter and put the plate back on.. its VERY easy. maybe an hours work if you stop to drink a soda

if you have a t45 tranny your gonna want to set your shiftstops( there is a thread in the general section on this...also very simple)

just follow the direction, steeda gives great pictures and describes in detail what to do.. you will have no issues i promise

all i did was stick a hammer sideways between tranny and the trim and use the claw to pry it off.

just did my tri-ax tonight......easy swap, had trouble getten to the top two bolts that hold the cover on.......set the stops with enough room slid a folded dollar bill threw it......shifter is crazy how short you have to move it to switch the gears.....like im not even moving it to get it to hit um....very pleased with it.

its harder on a fox.. top 2 bolts are a pita... not on the 04 though. just get someone local who has basic hand tools to help you.. instructions are verry good, and if they charge you more than a few beers, they're ripping you off...

It's great!!! The shifts are much shorter and the power band stays more consistent. Instead of dropping during shifts between gears. It is louder than stock but I just turned the radio up a little and couldn't hear the tranny noise. Over all I love it!!!! Thanks Brett I'll be in touch for the shorty antenna install and the new shifter knob install also as soon as they come in!!!! Just kidding once again thanks for the help!!!! Jimmy

Everything I've read about tranny noise is because the new shifter isn't as insulated as the stock shifter. If it bothers you check into getting a new boot from MGW maybe that wil insulate it better..
