    Sound System in a 65?

So i have decided to put a sound system in my 65coupe i have the kick panels with cutouts for speakers and i plan on putting two speakers in the back and placeing the deck in the glovebox...I have never done any kind of car stereo and wanted to know how difficult it will be since my car is older or if im going to need anything besides the basic components to make this work? thanks

Shouldn't really be any different than any other car. If anything, it will be easier than a newer car to run the wires, etc. Installling kick panels in the front should be nice, and I'm not sure where the speakers mount in the rear, but I'd keep it simple. If that's enough for you, stop there. If not, a nice single 10" sub in the right size box in the trunk should be nice. Just keep it simple and clean!

Should be an easy project, just take your time and have everything on hand before you start. Use a good quality power and speaker wires and you should be good.

If I remember right you should be able to mount 2 6x9's on the rear package deck. A sub would not sound that good unless the trunk is covered in dynamat or some type of spray on sound deadner. Old cars rattle like there is no tomorrow when you add a sub/s.

Ok, wasn't sure if they had a space for them in that location on the older cars. Stock look is what you want!

Didn't think rattling would be such an issue, was just mentioning it in case the 4 speakers didn't have enough lows for him.

yeah eventually id like to play dynomat down throughout the car to reduce driving noise in general but thats a lot of dynomat and a lot of money and i have a very low budget.

If budget is really an issue, I'd just stick with just the speakers and a head unit. You can always add amps/subs down the road with ease.

There are also some lower priced alternatives to Dynamat like Second Skin and Fatmat.

Some 6X9s in in the rear and small speakers in the kickpanels is a good start. The wiring should be a breeze everything comes of easy and goes back the same. One thing i noticed when i did the sound in the 73 rattling was a bit of an issue with the 6x9s under the window, when they were loose. make sure they are nice and tight. As for a amp/sub, a 10 and something small is plenty to sound good without drowning out your car, for you and those around you. Oh and without draining your battery... its happened to me a few times.. haha, but i had a 750 watt with and two 12's. it was pretty bangin but that was when i was in HS and easily influenced... now id rather here my car rumble than my speakers.

right now ive got a 300 watt and a 10. 2 6X9's and some 4" up front by the seats. I think I have a ground issue or im getting noise through the antenna somewhere cause whenever iuse the tuner and the car is running, im gettin it.

Make sure you have a solid ground.

I think the max size with out having to cut sheet metal behind the kick panels is a 6 1/2. The package tray will rattle very easily as it's only a piece of pressed board laying on top of the sheet metal. When mounting the speakers from above they usually hold the tray down, but since you are going for the stealy look and mounting from underneath, there will be nothing to keep the tray from rattling.

A cheap way would be to get some thin upholstery foam and glue it to the bottom of the package tray. Take the tray out and use a good spray glue like the 3M Upholstery glue that you can get at Autozone. Spray the tray and foam evenly, let it tack for a few minutes then press them together. Trim off any excess foam with a razor blade.

    For Stang1973:
You might have alternator whine coming through. Does the noise change as the RPMs go up and down? You need to check all your grounds and possibly add an extra ground to your head unit or mounting cage. Don't rely solely any ground you may have through just the wiring harness.

easy for the back if you wanna run new wires just unscrew you door plate and there is a channel under it that you can run the wires and also next to the back seat there is lots of room behind the metal.

    good luck and post pics

On the rear shelf a one 6x9 will fit in the center hole, but the out two will not. So yeah you'll have to mount them from the bottom to not have to trim the holes out larger.
I had thought about just drilling a oval pattern of holes in the package tray above the speakers and not using a grill at all. Also thought about just covering the whole tray in speaker cloth to hide a 6x9 hole above the speakers.
If I remember correctly you want to run the speaker wires on the passenger side, since there isn't any other wires there. have to pull back seat, quarter trim panel and sill plate, then the wires have an easy place to route.

When my 65 was running its exhaust was too loud, so I eventually took out the radio completely. Since my dash had been previously cut to fit a DIN opening I put a set of gauges in the hole. Probably how I will do it again too. Someday when its more than just a shell.

no for real tho, you will be suprised with what a good head unit will do with some decent speakers. I think in the back of mine i had some 5 1/2" speakers. with the 6x9s i think you may need to cut into the rear package tray. let us know how it goes.

This is somthing I will be needing to do in my 66. right now the only whole for a speaker is the one in the top of the dash I will be needing to get a new radio as the one in it it is shot but in hte back seat as of right now they have no holes cut for speakers. so the coice is mine in preferance. But post up what you have done when your finished would be very helpful. Thanks and good luck.
