The same thing they do in any differential carrier. They transfer the power from the ring gear to the axle shafts.
i have another question, do C clips have to sit an a specific way (is there a C indentation in the spider gear) or do they just sit freely around the axle shaft?

They just fit around the shaft. The C part is to allow you to install/remove them
