starter relay problems
update to the problem described below... i attached them to the positive side of the relay. now i have lights, but still absolutely nothing when i turn the key.
suggestions? my 14 yr old son saved up his money and bought a 68 stang to restore. the positive side of the starter relay broke off, so we bought a new relay. i wasnt there when he put the new relay on. i told him to take one wire at a time off of the old one, and put that wire on the new one so he wouldnt get anything crossed. well now nothing works... no lights, no starter, nothing... there are 2 wires with loop connections (one single wire and one set of wires) that are not connected. my son said he "doesnt think" they were connected to the old relay. he "thinks" they were just there. but when i look at them, the center part is still shiny, telling me they prob were connected. so now i'm trying to figure out where they go. we bought a repair manuel, but the wiring diagram in it is too vague to be able to tell. i have attached a photo of it. can anybody help? thanks much Latenite |

those loops go on the battery side of the solenoid, they are the main power to everything in the car.
only the wire to the starter goes on the other side. Normally the solenoid is sitting the other way, it is upside down in pic, that shouldn't affect function though.

ok i attached the wires and now have lights, but still nothing when i turn the key.
checking with a test light... on the positive post of the starter relay, all of the wires have power without the key on. then, testing the two wires that plug onto the front of the relay. with the key turned, the one towards the front of the car has power. the other one (the one circled in the new pic i have attached) barely barely has power. suggestions? |

It does affect function. Power can only go one way thru it to energize it. I found that out recently. ![]()

its all about the learning experience
I got my 1965 mustang at 14 also. I learned alot fixing it up. The advantage about the old cars, a little miss wiring just means it won't work, unlike a new car, mess up and you can fry the computer
