    Steering or Suspension noise

In the past two days my car started making a deep whining noise when I slow down and start to turn, but also when I go over a bump. So I have no idea what it is. There is no noise when I am speeding up though. Maybe steering pump? Any ideas?

does it whine when the car is just sitting and idling and you turn the wheel also? if so, then yes, power steering pump. make sure it has fluid first and if its low see if there is a leak.

    Damn, I think it does.

    Are they difficult to replace?

remove your fan, use a pulley puller to remove the p/s pulley (obviously you have to take off the belt) then you'll have 4 bolts, 3 are easy (10mm) one you have to take out 1/3 turn at a time with an open ended wrench unless you take the line off first.

if it's a steering whine, it shoulde be a whine, kinda high pitched... top off your power steering fluid to see if it helps.

Drain the PS fluid and throw some fresh M1 ATF in there. Chances are the fluid is just old & dirty. Don't condemn the pump yet.

Follow the larger rubber hose directly off the bottom of the reservoir. It'll hook to a mteal line and have a hose clamp on it.

Put the front end up in the air and take that hose loose. This will drain the reservoir. Then leave the drain pan under there and turn the front wheels back and forth a few times (with the engine OFF). This will push some more fluid out.

Reconnect the rubber hose and fill up the reservoir. Then turn the front wheels back and forth a few times (with the engine still OFF). This will help burp the system and the reservoir level should drop a little. Top off the reservoir then start the car but DON'T turn the wheels. Let it run for a few minutes. Then slowly turn the wheels back and forth.

Check the reservoir for any fluid foaming. You might see some bubbles in there but if it's faoming it should be easily visible. Put the front end back down, start the car, and turn the wheels back and forth. It should feel normal. Take a drive around the block, and then check the reservoir level again. Top off if needed. You're done.
