Straight 6 To V8 in a 65
Just picked up a 65. it has a 6 with a 3 speed. looking to go 8. would a 289 or 302 be better and would it be hard or require a lot of modification to the car. if it does imma just leave it as is. and rebuild the six
Any info appreciated thanx in advanced |

Since these cars are becoming harder to come by I'd recomend leaving it alone. There are alot of things that are completely different that could get very costly unless you had a V8 parts car to pick parts off of.

Stainless Steel brake corp comes to mind but they are on the high end $$ wise. Do a little reading/research there are several options avail to you.

65 6 cylinders have marginal brakes, Even the V8 drum brakes are minimal.
Brake upgrade should be a priority. As for and engine swap, front suspension - spindles, brakes, springs. Rear suspension, larger axle and springs. Not hard, Very basic, I think all parts are available aftermarket to do most anything. I have a 65 289 auto, plans of a 351W stroker, 5 speed swap. but still in the rusted out stage ![]() |

64-66 v-6 brakes v8 etc
Quote:
You have ONE choice when doing the disc brake conversion on a six cylinder and that is stainless steel brakes sells a kit for 1098.00 for non power 1389 for power the hubs and drums are totaly different betwwen 64-65 v8 and 6 cyl and you can not convert to disc other then that kit without first switching to v-8 brakes so to use any of the other disc brake kits requires you to switch to v-8 drum brakes and spindles and to v-8 steering as well the steering and spindles are different. also this now means you need a 5 lug rear end as well .. so there realy is no way of doing the disc brakes cheaper then the ss bc kit since even if you junkyarded everything and did the granada brake shadetree disc conversion you still would end up more by the time you replace the rear end to get a 5 lug patern in the back as well since all v-8s are five lug and the 64-65 six were four lug. as for the v-8 swap its extremely easy.. you simply need a v-8 289 or 302 and a the correct bellhousing for the trany .. < i believe they are the same but i may be wrong > and a v-8 linkage for the throttle pedal. the wiring is very basic and easily done as well. In my car i did a 302 with a c-4 conversion removed the clutch pedal and installed a shifter out of a automatic gt. < any year 64-68 non consol shifter works > i have that complete drive train for sale btw 20 k miles on the rebuilt 2 barrel 302 and the c-4 has about 12 k since rebuild and they run perfect includes a set of tri Y headers as well as the v8 mounts etc and i averaged about 18 mpg with it due to the two barrel carb I removed everything out of my car two days ago to install a heidts mustang 2 iIFS and rack and pinion in preperation for a 4 valve 4.6 and cobra irs swap you DO NOT have to do the steering or brakes or spring swap to put the v-8 in the car my car drove perfect with stock 6 cylinder stuf Well except for thebrakes suck arse and it is still 6 cyl sprigns and sway bars so it wont win any handleing competitions it just sat about a inch lower with the v-8 and i never broke or hurt the rear end in any way as the small tire you got back there is going to spin long before the rear gives however a larger tire and or high performance engine will brake the 7 1/4 rear.

ill be doign a 4.6 4 valve with a single turbo most likely.
and that car was NOT a 4.6 conversion if you refer to the yellow car it was a complete whole 04 cobra that they cut the body panels off of and modified a fastback body over the cobra frame. its a 03 cobra with a early body not a early car with 03 drive train.
