T5 in 71

will a T5 fit in a 71 mustang? fit in stock tunnel without modifying it?
it was originally a 3 speed car, now an auto C4, but want it to be a manual.
also has a 302, which could become a 351W.
What type of linkage does a T5 have for the clutch. What will it take to connect it to the original clutch linkage in the car.

Anyone know of this swap? Will the shifter come out in the right place in the console? I'll have to change the crossmember and driveshaft.

I just sold a T5 to a guy putting it into a 66 the other day . The easiest way to do it is using the factory bellhousing and clutch setup with an adapter to bolt the T5 to the factory bellhousing .

You can also go to moderndriveline.com and shoot them a e-mail and they can tell you everything needed and there prices then you can take the list and shop around or just buy it all from them. I thought they were very helpful when I inquired about putting a t5 or t56 6spd into my 66GT, still haven't decided if I want to do the swap though.

Gonna put a T56 in my 65 coupe. It will not fit in the tunnel, but that is ok. Floor is gone anyway.

It seems quite basic, especially since the car was a 3 speed and still has the clutch pedal in place. Looks like all I need is the adapter for the cable instead of the mechanical linkage. oh and the crossmember and driveshaft, but that is no big deal.
If I do it, I will probably put it behind a 351 instead of the 302.

i have a t5 in my 65. no tunnel mods needed.
as for the motors... check flywheel weights, if different, get on that can be changed. my hanes could go from 28 to 50 oz imbalance.
that's my
02 cents

Question

how do know what weight flywheel is in a car? Can you tell visually or do you have to remove it?

thanks, izzy jr

My Dad had one in a '73, courtesy some pieces from Modern Driveline. It's not a difficult fit at all, the toughest part was that the clutch cable kept binding. The stock pedals should work, though, with what I believe was a cable from Modern Driveline. Unfortunately, since it was behind a Cleveland motor, I can't help you with the flywheel issue.

If you have a 302 it will be a 50 oz imbalance weight. 289 V8 was 28 oz imbalance and If I am not wrong the 351W is 50 oz as well. the 351C.... I don't know, but would be 50 as well.
I did the swap using a tranny from a 90's 5.0 (up to 94, in 95 the input shaft is to long)
These had the Hydro linkage in the rear, so your original linkage would go out the window. I even took the pedal assembly out of the GT and put into mine so that it would be self adjusting!!!
just put in the cable with the adapter plate and your set.
any ?'s just pm me.
