KHARTOUM, Sudan (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan visited war-ravaged Darfur region of Sudan Wednesday, seeing first hand the devastation of Arab militias' violent campaign against black Africans.

"We have a humanitarian catastrophe and a security crisis," Powell told CNN in an exclusive interview after the visit. "It was a moving experience."

Powell's visit is the first to Sudan by a U.S. secretary of state since 1978.

The trip came as the United States began to circulate text of a draft resolution calling on the Sudanese government to take critical actions to build security and bring about peace in Darfur.

The country has long been wracked by a civil war, and the conflict in Darfur exploded last year when rebels attacked government property, accusing the government of neglecting mostly black Darfur in favor of the country's Arab population.

The government responded by setting up Arab militias, known as Janjaweed, to put down the rebellion. The militias are accused of waging a campaign to expel black Africans from the vast and remote section of the country.

cliffnotes: the Gov't of Sudan didn't appreciate it when a group from one part of the coutry protested against a policy of theirs. So they hired some Arab militants and said kill anything that has black skin color.

it may come to that. the UN is too busy trying to de-oderize itself with the on going investigations on "OIL-FOR-FOOD".

i gotta be honest. i think the u.n. is a joke, and i dont see it accomplishing anything. there is too much politics, and too much coruption involved when it comes to the u.n.

America has a strong alliance with Canada, Britian, Australia, and New Zealand. it's called the "ABCA" it is a much stronger organization than the u.n., and we can count on those countries when the shit hits the fan.
