Timing Cover Questions
1. What are the differences between the years? Mine's a 2000...
2. How hard is it to swap? (ie, how long should it take) 3. Special tools required? 4. Special parts? I'm assuming a gasket, what else? 5. Anything I should check out while it's off, or replace while I'm there? 6. Do I have to pull the crank pulley? My 2000 GT has a crack around the tensioner mount (just down the belt from the alternator). I replaced the pulley with one from Ford yesterday, drove it 70 miles, and it was already making noise again. I haven't pulled off the new one, but I do know the old pulley was shot - you could shake it and it rattled. I've decided I'm going to replace the whole timing cover, since it is cracked a little more than 1/2 way around the protrusion the pulley mounts over, and we really can't tighten the bolt enough. Keep in mind that I have no garage and I borrow jacks and jackstands! I really need help ![]()

for a first timer the swap is pretty time consuming. I f i were you, i would go ahead and get some cams to install. seriously, removing the T.C. is the most full proff way to do acam swap, so you might as well swap the cams. I also do not know of any cammed 2valves in CS. it would be sweet and give good power. VT stage ones will be nice, and they also work pretty decent with a P/A. One last thing, while the T.C. is off, i would double check the cam tensioners to be on the safe side.
in general SHM sucks big balls, but their 2v, 4v handbook is a really good shop manual to have.

I don't know, it's whatever was on it. The pulley itself did go bad, I'm not sure what "going bad" really entails but if you shake it it rattles, and I'm assuming that's not a good thing...toasted bearing maybe? I noticed when I pulled it off the first time that the bolt had been wrenched on before (had some rounded edges) so maybe it was too tight...?I honestly have no idea what really caused it, but I gotta fix it soon!

sounds like someone had underdrives on it and took them off when they sold the car. maybe they went back with a belt that was too small? just throwing out ideas. i bought a new serpentine for my '92 and it was a bitch to get the tensioner to let up enough just to get it on. sometimes i dont think they fit like they should. i would go back with Ford stuff this time.

that is a strange strange crack, typically those threads will strip before something like that happens. on a side note a cam awap would cost you just the cams since you will be doing all the work. 2v cams are in the $600 range. it is definitely something to think about.

So, does $600 include valve train upgrades etc? Or will 96k springs be OK with new cams? How much will it lope? I want a sleeper
On an aside, about how much should I expect to spend on new gaskets? I'm pretty sure that I'll need new ones on the cam covers at the very least, there's a good bit of silicone around the edges...who knows what I'll find under there

gaskets are cheap. if you want a sleeper, i wouldnt really recommend going with cams.

here are some VT stg ones. i don't think they are that bad, but it is up to you. if i had to tear off my T.C. i would definitely do this upgrade since i don't like to spend money twice. these cams work with stock springs, but if you would like to get some, then go for it. the price i noted is just for cams though. my car is a sleeper to 95%of the public, and at cruising it is a sleeper to everybody. you would be in the same boat with cams.

technology > displacement

the gasket will run around $20-$30
there are MANY different timing covers for 2v's, I dont even know where to start as there are so many, they will probably all work with a little change here and there. But I would try to get one from a 00

I think cams are a bit too much $$ right now...unless I can find a ridiculous deal on some used ones, or I find a sponser...It would be nice though. really nice.
