which formula? there is endless formulas. here is one...

(tau)=I(alpha)

where:
tau=torque
I=moment of inertia
alpha=angular acceleration
but i dont think thats what you are looking for.

Horsepower = How hard you hit the wall

Torque = How far the wall moves when you hit it.

i bet by tranny gears, they mean your final gear ratio, NOT the number of gears your tranny has. final gear ratio for a stock v6 99+ is 3.27 i beleive.

I know what your looking for. It has to do with torque multiplication or deduction thru drivetrain loss. It's pretty complicated and i'm sure it's out on the net somewhere, just have to go and find it.

Five speeds usually have more HP because they have less rotational mass.

Torque is lost in an automatic because of more friction being created and fluid being pumped around.

wrong

a torque converter multiplies torque...so an auto will make more torque on the low end...where the torque falls off depends on the size of the stall

btw... hp = torque x rpm/5252

Your right Brian, but it is lost thru the rest of the transmission and drivetrain, especially on stock trannys.

Here is some stuff to read Tim.

actually, a big stall sKews the dyno reading and will make more torque than a stick on many many applications, but yes drivetrain loss is more in an auto than in a stick.
Each auto has its unique drivetrain loss. aod, c4 c6 turbo350, turbo 400, 700r4, 4l60e. Each one has different rotational mass that creates a different "transmission" of power to the wheels. This is the same for a Bigger rear end such as a ford 9 inch. It will show a lower dyno reading because of the extra rotational mass. A lighter aluminum driveshaft is an improvement based on this effect, and the fact that it is more balanced than stock. Liter rear wheels will have the same effect 18 inch saleens = bad, 15 inch bogarts = good

Tim you are thinking of torque multiplication. This is not changing the torque in your car. It is the same principle as on a 10 speed bike. In low gear you don't have to put to much effort into it because you have a mechanical advantage from the gears, the downside is that you have to pedal really fast to go anywhere. The same thing applies to cars. Numerically higher gears will multiply torque more, but your engine will have to turn more rpm to go the same speed. You need to remember that this multiplication will not show up on the dyno. If it did you would get some ungodly high torque numbers and they would be different for each gear.

If your confused by that I can try explaining it in person the next time I am at the forum.
