tranny/clutch problem?

Hey what's up everyone, I'm new to this. I have a 1998 cobra that doesn't want to go into reverse or 1st while it is turned on. I can force it into 1st but reverse will only go in if the car is turned off. Could someone let me know if it is a tranny or clutch problem? Thanks in advance for any response I may receive.

Sounds like a tranny problem.

if you can shift fine with the car off then the clutch is not fully engaging.
