Question V6 exhaust idiot with a question- yeah I'm a newb

What the heck does this mean?

He got GT takeoffs, and put Thrush mufflers on, and just had them cut the Y pipe before it turned into one, and then fabbed up piping to the two ends from the mufflers.

    And what are Mac duals?

Mac duals are Dual Mac mufflers ie. 2 mac mufflers

GT takeoffs are the tips off a GT

Thrush mufflers are mufflers made by a company called...Thrush

Look at the shape of the Y... it is 2 up top and then comes together as 1...He cut it before it all collected together and put the piping from there back..

It's alright newb. We all start somewhere.

GT takeoffs are stock GT exhaust from either the cats (catalytic converters) back, or the axle (rear axle) back. There are places to buy "slightly used" GT takeoffs for a decent price. These places get the GT takeoffs from tuners such as Saleen and Roush who take a brand new GT and convert it into a Saleen or Roush... and when doing so they take the brand new GT exhaust off. But they can't sell the parts as "new" because they do have a couple miles on them. So they are sold as "GT takeoffs".

Thrush mufflers are just the mufflers that guy decided to go with.

When he said he "had them cut the Y pipe" he's most likely talking about having the stock V6 Y-pipe custom fabricated into an H-pipe. Stock V6s come with a Y-pipe. The Y-pipe combines the two sides of the exhaust into one just before the muffler. GTs have an H-pipe, which makes it dual exhaust.

Mac duals = Mac is a name brand for mufflers and exhaust. Duals just means he is running dual exhaust.

You can also look into getting some high performance muffler bearings to help free up some horsepower.

Whoa! before you rush out and spend that kind of money, I should tell you that I have heard that those may soon be for off road use only. Something to do with emmisions but anyway, if you decide to risk it, KaleCoAuto has some of the best prices on them I have seen

    try this link:
    Mustang_V6_Exhaust_Conversion_KIT_Manual

I had this Kit installed on my sixer on StangTV.. They dyno'd before and after and it showed a 35 hp gain over stock.

I was looking at that exhaust kit for my 6'r, its the least expensive most complete kit I found, but several users say that it drones A LOT at highway cruising speeds.

Thats cool.....hows it sound just cruising? Any other changes to your car such as gears or something that may affect the drone others have mentioned?

The only other change from stock (so far) is a set of 18 inch black bullet wheels (off my Shelby GT). The drone others report might be a bad install i.e. hangers not sound isolated causing a sound short.. I haven't noticed any sort of drone, and it really does have a surprisingly good sound, very deep not high pitched or raspy (as you get with so many V6 dual exhausts). The Dyno is what surprised me, I would have found it hard to believe if I hadn't seen it myself. She dyno'd out to 245 hp after the exhaust install, a gain of 35 hp! I'm adding a cold air intake and ram air hood next.

I think OP is referring to my set up.

The Y pipe under our car looks like this.

Notice how after the cats the two pipes come together as one. DIRECTLY behind each cat, I had the exhaust shop cut. Then from there, they fabricated divorced dual pipes out to GT tail pipes. Everything between the muffler and the cats is fabbed by the shop. Does this help? Thrush was just my muffler of choice.

i have longtubes with a O/R X pipe and it drones a little at highway speeds, but i have 3.73's in the rear and i'm cruising at 2,500 rpm. The drone gets really loud at 3,000 rpm and up.

I was looking at the exhaust link u posted again and just noticed that it comes with GT mufflers instead of the pypes violator mufflers . This probably better explains the lack of drone I was talking about. Pypes has a vid link to your set up on thier site. Sounds good!

yep, its the pypes X pipe and 2 take off GT mufflers, the cost is low and quality high. I have had this set up for about 6 months now and I love it. We have insatalled the same kit on another sixer in our San Diego club with the same results. The install was extreemly easy.
