I'd just add a $40 inline electric pump in place of the factory one and be done with worrying if the other one is too much... That, the intake and carb.. That should be all you need... I've got a brand new Edelbrock 600 still in the box I'll sell you for $200.. LMK

You will need to replace the distributor also. There is also a small fuel pump in the tank. I had an SVO years ago, I pulled the pump off of the frame and the hose that connects from the pump to the filter. I then ran the fuel line from the tant to the filter. I then installed a larger pump in the tank. Then you will need to install a fuel pressure regulator prefferably one with a return and you will need to use the return fuel line that is on the car. You could build a block to mount your current TBI fuel pressure regulator on and use it as your regulator, it is adjustable and it will workd in the pressure range you will need to be in.

i am on my third '84 V8 mustang and my second convertible, and the factory set up on these cars is a carb with a mechanical fuel pump on the front of the engine. if you have a tbi set up it is not factory, and the location of the fuel pump tells me that either someone hacked up a SVO or it is aftermarket. i am in the process of completely rebuilding and restoring my second convertible now. i was under the car all weekend putting on new CA's and Springs on all 4 corners and i know there is no other fuel pump under my car. as far as the parts you will need, it is uncertain because of your "non-factory" set up, there is no electronics (computer) to worry about programing. if you are looking at wanting to replace the fuel pump and you want a factory style set up, you can go to autozone and buy a factory '84 fuel pump and bolt it up to your timing cover, if the previous owner didnt remove the cam plate to actuate the pump.

sounds to me like someone hacked in one of those holley efi set ups (tbi like stated in the above post) if this is the case, check the fuel pressure, it should only be about 7 psi or something very low like that.. in which case you should just remove the fuel line, and swap out your "throttle body" for a carb.... how about you post some pics... if this is what i'm thinking of, ALL you need is a carb.

Hmm,CFI cars mount the pump off the inside of the right
frame rail from the factory, right where the right side
muffler would go.The tailpipe would have a problem clearing
the fuel line also.Thats one reason they used single
exhaust on Mustangs and the LTDLXs down the left side.

Ford says "Fuel pump, 5.0 FI cars built before 11/84,externally
mounted on frame of vehicle''.

Sorry but this is some incorrect info. Ford did CFI until 11/84 on auto trans cars.
V6s and V8s.
The timing cover on his car probably doesnt have the hole for the fuel pump arm
to go through ever though the mounting holes are tapped for a manual pump.
Hitman,Is your car by chance a manual trans car?

Yes the 84 1/2 and 85 auto trans cars were CFI.

both convertibles i have owned were manual transmissions, but the GT hatch i owned was an auto, and it was set up exactly like my manuals were. could be my GT was an early 84 and that all the books and manuals i own for the 84 are wrong. from my expirience, you didn't get the CFI until right at or just before the release of the 85. my books could have been printed for the majority of the 84's and didnt take the CFI into account. I do appologize if what i said was wrong, but you only know what your exprience and research tell you. All the info i have says nothing about CFI on a "1984" mustang.

It not a problem.Ford actually had CFI on the baby
LTDs 83-86 and shows Mustangs late 83-11/84 with
frame mounted pumps.
