What would you do?
I was looking to sell my 92 5 speed white coupe mildley modded w/ 145k miles. Car runs perfectly fine and has ice cold a/c.
I was looking to sell it for a SN95 black/black, 5 speed, 104k. I found a guy willing to trade but his was a bit more modded, it had TFS heads. So we talked and his car looks fine but it doesn't have A/C, he said the guy told him it needs a seal changed and refilled. He was going to fix all this and take the heads off so we worked a deal. I was going to pay 850 over the 4800 I was asking for my car for his(with stock heads and A/C fixed). I thought that was a fair price for the deal. Now he said to knock a 100 bucks off the deal if I deal with the A/C(I know A/C's have guages and the works so its not that big of a deal) I said... fine. So now the price is 750 over my car for his. Now that he swapped the stock heads in, it's not running. It cranks... but it's not running. He doesn't know whats wrong. he had some connections not connected but tht didn't solve the problem. Now he thinks it's a vaccum leak, very well could be. I asked if the heads were any good that he put on, he said they were, MAYBE a valve was burned(but shouldnt it still run?). Anyways I told him fine.. again BUT I'am holding 600 bucks of the money so he only get's 150 of it until I figure out the problem and if it's going to cost, it's coming out of the money I owed him until it runs right and then the left over money if any will be his. He agreed to this. He lives in Kansas I live in SA. I'am meeting him in Waco tomorrow but right now I told him I didn't know about this deal. Red flags keep getting throw up in my face. He's been cool with me, never rude me niether. What's your feelings? If it ran fine prior to heads as I do believe it did, another set of stock heads or maybe GT40's wouldn't put me over oweing anything to him even with installation, if that's the worst case scenerio. Anyone else? |

How about you both hold on to the title of the car you currently own.
Then when you get the car running, you can let him know. A title can be mailed, which is easy enough. Then if you got screwed by him, you still have the title to your car so you ca reclaim it! ANd if he won't let you, report it stolen and give them his whereabouts. And hold his car until you get your back. If he's truly not scamming you, then there should be no worry about this in his head because he KNOWS it will be ok.

I'd never trust anyone selling a used car I didn't personally know. Too many things can go wrong with nowhere to turn.

The Blue Beast's suggestion sounds good to me... and coupled with your withholding some of the money... it doesn't sound like it should be a problem.
I would also spell out the terms of the sale and have him sign the bill of sale so if the car is crap... he is legally accountable for it because you have proof as to what the terms are. make sense? |
