Whats a good cam for

a '66 302 block with stocks head, edelbrock performer intake, and a 600cfm carb?Crane Energizer Cam
Edelbrock Performer Plus Cam
Those are just a couple I looked at. Don't really have any idea which would be good for that setup.

I'll have tri-y headers on the 302 im getting from dean at psiperformance.
I know I need to get the right springs. would roller rockers be the best to get?

e7s are hardly good heads ryan. i know that BHAM ports the hell out of em tho, and they are somewhat resectable.. but ur better off finding some gt40s and getting those ported.

true, but they are better than my stock 289 heads, I would love some gt-40's but cant get them at the price I want/afford right now. so the e7's will have to do

why dont u do something smart, and get a motor stand, set ur new 302 on it and build it up. your car runs fine now. do it right and save for some good heads, get some quality parts the 1st time around. then do the swap. in the end u will save a ton of time.

iv seen gt40s go for as low as 200 bucks. thats not that bad...

I am going to build it up Cody thats why I want to find a good cam, I ain't going to just drop the motor in my car over a weekend, although this one is ready to go.
and nooooooo way my car runs fine now. i can tell she about to quit any next mile she goes. there isn't shit for compression and I'd rather not be broke down with a blown motor and have to pay $100 or more just to get towed home.
I'll keep looking for some gt-40s but if I can't find a good set I'll do with the e7's for now. although thesource might think about selling the heads off that explorer motor seperately to me... hmm

You said you have a '66 302, ford did not make a 302 until '68. I am gessing you have '66 289 heads on a 302 or a 289. If you have '66 or older 289 heads they are better than the E7's The only advantage the E7's will have is hardened seats. The E7s the will lower your compression.

I will have a 302 block, I will be getting it from psiperformance tuesday. Dean said it was out of his '66, has tri-y headers and was rebuilt less than 2k miles ago. The engine I have now is a '65 289 block, and confirmed '65 because I had to replace the valve cover gaskets and check the date on the heads while I had the covers off.
When I get the 302. I'm going to put the edelbrock performer 289 intake and holley 4bll 6oo cfm carb I have on it.
so would it be better to swap my 289 heads onto the 302 to give it higher compression being that 289 chambers are smaller?

Check to see what heads are on the engine you get from Dean and what crank it has. I saw that engine in his shop a couple of months ago. I thought it was a 289, I don't remember why I thought that other than the try Y headers. The 289 and 302 blocks have the same bore, the only difference is the 289 has a shorter stroke and the 289 has longer rods. The '65 289 heads are some good heads as far as stock heads are concerned. If the 289 heads are in good condition I would use those, unless the engine you get from Dean has as good of a head or better. The '65 289 heads have adjustable rockers, which would allow you to run a solid lifter flat tappet cam. If you are not going to drive the car as a daily driver I would put a put a solid lifter flat tappet cam.
