The SVO had the best computer out of all of the 2.3 turbos, it was also intercooled, all had T5's. The '84 and early '85 SVO's had 185 hp, the late '85's had 205 hp, the '86's had 200 hp. The early cars had single exhaust, the late '85's and '86s had dual exhuast, better turbos better exhaust manifold and lower restriction cat. The SVO's are the best handling fox body cars, also have the best ride. They had adjustable Koni struts and shock from the factory and the rest of the suspension was completely different from all of the other fox cars, they used Lincoln Mark VII brakes front and rear. The fenders and quarters are different from the other fox cars, the lower control arms are forged, the K member is different, the control arm mounting holes are in different locations, to get more caster and a better SIA. The rear control arm mounting holes in the torque boxes are in different locations and the rear control arms are defferent length and have different bushings. To elemenate suspension bind. The Merkurs were made in Germany, they used the same 2.3, but were not intercooled, they were around 175 hp, had IRS rear, an auto trans was optional. The Mekurs had very little room under the hood. Like all German Fords, the wiring harnesses had lots of problems with the insulation rotting and falling off the wires, leaving a bunch of bare wires everywhere.Merkurs are simular in size and shape to the mid 80's Escorts. The 2.3 is base on Fords 2.0, that was first used in the US in the Pinto, the last variation of this engine was the 2.5 used in the Ranger. This engine was originaly designed by Ford of Germany.

The goal is to get the car to run 10.0 on radials, with out a power adder and still be streetable. My car is an '85 sonic blue coupe with 302 bored and stroked to 364, Ported Twisted Wedge heads and a BXR intake, A9M ECM with a Tweecer, C4 with trans brake, 275/60/15 M/T drag radials, no power adders. |

Merkurs all had t3s, like the SVOs, but different years had a small vam and a large vam, also injector sizes were dif. earlier ones had 30lb and later ones 36lb. SVOs also used inline intake manifolds as the Xr4s used box. The shortblocks between in turbocoupes, Xr4s, SVOs are all the same. Head design did change some between different modles and years. The intercoolers on the turbocoupes and SVOs kind of sucked position wise, right over the turbo and exhaust manifold. Also the older 2.3turbos used an e3 exhaust manifold that dint flow as well but is extremly prone to cracking. The 2.3Ts are awsome fricken engines, and I want to get another Xr4ti, just this time I'm going to do a 2.5t stroker instead of the 5.0 turbo. I will look around and see if if I can find some pics of my old 2.3t mustang swap, and my Xr4ti, witch is sitting in storage for the next 2 years
in south dakota.Any questions on the 2.3t or Merkurs, I prolly got the info (been a proud Merkur owner (both Scorpio and Xr4ti) for many moons now) awsome engines with great potential. |
