Smile Whining noise

So I just had someone install 3.73 gears on my 07 GT. The problem is, there is still whining taking place when I make left or right turns. It almost sounds like maybe its the brakes but it's not. This will be the third set of gears that I have installed. The latest set are FRPP. Someone the other day mentioned that it may not be the gears but the clutch packs? Any suggestions?

if your only getting whine on turns it 100 percent has nothing to do with the gears .. its the clutch packs in the differential slipping as they unlock to let the outer wheel spin faster.

Is this something that needs repair? I've driven the car approximately 5900 miles and it's been doing that for a bit. Any suggestions? Is it expensive?

At what speeds are you turning and hearing the noise?
Especially at lower speeds, you likely need from Friction Modifier (at least 1 TSB corrects whine/growl on turns by using it), especially if the fluid was changed and no friction modifier was put back in.
You need to add usually the contents of a 4 oz bottle. Then give it a few miles to work its way into the clutch packs.

Even with my 7.5" with trac-lok, I had to add some to prevent slow-turning noises.

The whining comes from the turns I make usually when I'm in a parking lot, trying to find a safe spot to park or when I'm about to pull into the garage. The turn could either be a left or a right turn, doesnt matter. I recently had 3.73 gears installed. I will take your advice on the friction mod. I believe I will let Ford deal with it first. Evidently my car has a recall or something to do about the passenger airbag.

If you didnt put the friction modifier oil in it, then that is DEFINITELY your problem ... Ford Rear ends REQUIRE you put in the Friction Modifier or else it will screw up your clutch packs, not to mention the entire differential ...

I appreciate the heads-up! I assumed that was already taken care of when I had the gears changed out. I know the last time I had the gears changed out, they forgot.....I am just waiting for my Betty to get back from paint before I take her to Ford, just in case. I noticed you dressed and pressed, where do you work? I work in Georgetown.

except that you had your gears changed so they will probably deny everything and blame it on the gear install...

Sorry, got a little carried away. Faster? Having played a cruel prank a few months ago, I would say my stang was definitely/infinitely faster than the crown vics.

Umm yeah, my 04' is also WAY faster than my Vic ... I plead the 5th on this story ..

However, since my car is a 1/4 mile car .. I have no top end .. I peak out at like 130-135 which is the same as my patrol unit with a light bar on top of it ..

Here is the TSB

TSB 06-19-2

10/02/06

8.8 LIMITED SLIP AXLE MOAN/GROAN NOISE DURING LOW SPEED TURNING MANEUVERS
FORD:
2005-2007 Mustang

This article supersedes TSB 06-12-11 to update the Service Procedure.
ISSUE
Some 2005-2007 Mustang GI vehicles equipped with the 8.8 inch limited slip axle may exhibit a moan/groan noise when making tight low speed turns. This may be more noticeable when the axle is at full operating temperature. The noise may also be confused as originating from the brakes or steering system.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. First, verify the concern.

a. Make sure the axle is at full operating temperature.

b. Perform several full lock turns at low speeds in both directions.

c. If the noise is verified to be in the rear axle, proceed to Step 2.

d. If the concern can not be verified or the noise is not coming from the rear axle assembly, then do not continue with this TSB and follow normal diagnostics in the Workshop Manual (WSM).

2. Replace the limited slip clutch pack, install the new limited slip clutch pack kit following the procedures in the Mustang WSM, Section 205-02B (Differential Carrier Removal and Differential Case/Ring Gear Disassembly).
