Just talked to Cassy, it's too expensive for her. I'd rather use that $$ towards putting a ring on a special finger of mine. I'm out. Sorry I didn't realize how much it was going to cost -- we don't even own any guns that I need a permit to carry.

you don't have to pay the $140 right away... you can wait up to two years to do that. the initial cost will be $70 + a rental if you need one.

whenever y'all get your handguns, you can mail in the $140.

...but that's all up to you.

Scott can go if he would like. If I'm gonna take the class now, then I would prefer to get the license now. I don't want to forgot about it and have to take the class again.

Sorry again I said I would go. I just didn't realize how much it cost. I heard that place you are going is a good and they do everything right there for you.

Is that the one on the southside? I took that course years back, but I never sent the packet in. Unless things have changed its an easy class. The hours are just mandatory by law. I might head out there with you guys, not sure yet.

Im intrested in getting my chl, specially since I work on the fricking westside (downtown) s.a.

Earlier in the post, someone said you dont have to register a handgun?
Could someone in law enforcement confirm this? I just dont believe that, if anything, a shotgun shouldnt need to be registered.
I know a few people with weapon charges pending as we speak, that's why I dont really trust the previous comment.
Any rate, Id like to do this, but right now, I dont have any extra cash, tied up in my car at the moment

Im not in law enforcement, but I know If you were to buy a gun of any sort, out of a store, whether it be used or not, then you have to register it, and they will check your background to make sure your not a criminal or have a criminal background. An individual seller who sells it to someone takes the risk of that person using it in an inappropriate way, then if they find out it was originally registered to you, you could be in hot water and have a lot of explaining to do. It only needs to be registered to the orginal owner, otherwise how could you buy them out of the newspaper?

how many times do i have to say it?

THERE IS NO FIREARM REGISTRATION IN THIS STATE!

when you buy a gun from an FFL, you fill out a form 4473 and an NICS check is run. this is NOT registration in any way, shape, or form. it's a simple check to confirm that you're not prohibited from buying firearms.

Quote:

State Requirements
Rifles and Shotguns
Permit to purchase rifles and shotguns? No.

Registration of rifles and shotguns? No.

Licensing of owners of rifles and shotguns? No.

Permit to carry rifles and shotguns? No.

Handguns

Registration of handguns? No.

Licensing of owners of handguns? No.

Permit to carry handguns? Yes.

What are the Gun Laws in Texas?

lets not call it registered then, but the serial number to that gun you just bought will come up with your name on it. That may not be "registered", but to me its just as good.

don't be so sure about that... being that there is no registry, there's no way for the serial number to come up.

the form that is filled out that has your info and the serial number is kept by the FFL that sold you the firearm, not the government.

one of the officers here actually advised me to engrave my drivers license number on the inside of the stocks of my firearms. the reason was that he has no way of running the serial numbers on stolen firearms to see who the owner is.

bs. Stolen guns are recovered all the time, because they are reported stolen w/ the serial#.
My dad has a gun registered to him, well, whatever you want to call it, and he has to go pick it up from the police station, since the judge dismissed his weapon case, and he is now allowed to go pick it up, how else would they know it's his? they are not just going to give it to him without making sure he owned it.

the brady campaign's view on Texas. for those who don't know, the brady's are a group determined to abolish all gun rights... they don't like our laws.

State Gun Laws :: Texas

RECORD KEEPING
May police maintain gun sale records? No

State law forbids police from keeping any record of gun sales. Police are prohibited from maintaining gun sale records that could be used for gun tracing and criminal investigations. The state has no way of knowing whether people who bought guns in the past have become criminals and are no longer allowed to possess firearms. The lack of gun sale records also makes it very difficult to identify and prosecute gun traffickers or gang members that buy guns in bulk and resell them on the street.

REGISTRATION
Are all guns registered with law enforcement? No

No state requirement that gun owners register their firearms. Police do not know how many guns are in the state or where they are. The lack of registration data makes it more difficult for police to trace guns used in crime, identify illegal gun traffickers or hold gun owners accountable for their weapons. There is no state system to automatically identify and disarm felons and other prohibited people who bought guns legally in the past, but later committed a crime or otherwise became ineligible to keep possession of their firearms.
